Program Description: The General Studies Associate of Arts degree is a flexible transfer program that is designed for students who complete or test out of a two-semester foreign language series and either have not decided upon a major or need to customize their courses for transfer to a specific baccalaureate degree program. Students who have not yet chosen a major are encouraged to explore their interests by selecting courses from a variety of disciplines. Students who have identified a future major may select classes that satisfy specific prerequisite and pre-major requirements for their intended baccalaureate degree. Since different universities have different degree requirements, students are encouraged to select appropriate courses that will satisfy requirements at their anticipated transfer institution.
The General Studies Associate of Arts degree requires a minimum of 61 semester hours of transferable credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or better (2.5 or better is recommended). The AA degree also requires successful completion of any language course at the 1020 level or higher as part of the 27 credits beyond general education. These courses are listed as (LN). This requirement may also be fulfilled by taking the second-year courses 2010 and/or 2020 or through experiential language credit options.
Transfer/Articulation Information: Admission into a major program at a transfer institution depends upon the receiving institution’s requirements for that major. Some major programs are restricted and require special application as well as a competitive GPA. See an Academic Advisor at both SLCC and the intended receiving institution for specific articulation information, also available at www.slcc.edu/academicadvising/transfercenter.
Students should also be advised that a Bachelor of Arts (BA) will require four semesters or more of a foreign language and many four-year institutions may require those courses to be taken consecutively. SLCC also offers a wider selection of languages than many transfer institutions; it may not be possible to continue study of a specific language after transfer. Students should check with the institution to which they plan to transfer.
Estimated Cost for Students: There is no additional cost for this program beyond SLCC tuition and fees.
Estimated Time to Completion: If students follow the suggested sample schedule, time to completion is four semesters.
