Requirements at four-year colleges and universities are subject to change; ongoing planning is essential. Students interested in degrees designed for more immediate business employment should review the Certificate and Associate of Applied Science degrees.

Transfer/Articulation Information
Course articulation agreements exist with Brigham Young University, College of Eastern Utah, Dixie State University, Southern Utah University, Snow College, University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, Weber State University and Westminster College. Agreements are available in Business Building, room 132, or Student Center room 240 in the Transfer Center files or with academic advisors at other campuses. Transfer planning is essential. Advisors are available in Business Building, Room BB 132-A, or Student Center Room 240, or advising at other SLCC campuses. Students who will major in accounting should consider completing the accounting courses just prior to transfer so they are ready for the junior level accounting requirements.

BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY - Pre-Accounting Majors
Accounting at BYU is a limited enrollment, competitive admission major, accepting students once a year for fall only. Prerequisites-ACC 200 or 201; ACC 310 or 202; MCOM 320; ISYS 201; ISYS 100 & 101 (CIS 2010)-must be completed with the grades posted before applying to the accounting program. ACCT 2010  (BYU ACC 201) and ACCT 2020  (ACC 202) must have a minimum grade of ‘B’ or better. All prerequisite transfer grades are discounted .3 (e.g., A to A-). Transfer students can increase their acceptance possibilities by (1) taking BYU’s ACC 310 and (2) complete one semester of BYU courses. These courses may also be completed at the BYU Salt Lake Center. The minimum GPA to apply is 3.0, but the typical GPA for admissions to accounting is 3.8. Rolling admissions begins Nov. 1 of the preceding year. (Rolling admissions means that the accounting committee sets a very high acceptance standard and any students who meets that acceptance standard is accepted prior to the final application deadline the last working day of June. All other applying students are placed in the standard ranking list and acceptance is determined under usual acceptance-typically in July.) http://marriottschool.byu.edu

PREPATORY CLASSES:
Students who need to take preparatory classes to meet the requirements of first semester courses should plan on extra time to complete the program. SLCC may waive any class in the preparatory skills if students can demonstrate equivalent skills. It is the student’s responsibility to:

  • examine each course description for details of prerequisite classes.
  • satisfy those prerequisites before taking the designated class.

CHOOSING ACCOUNTING OPTION:
Accounting Option 1 is modeled after the University of Utah’s ACCT 2600 course.  Only the University of Utah accepts Option 1.

Accounting Option 2 coverage is accepted at all Utah 4-year colleges/universities.

Students may also choose to take a three course accounting track (ACCT 1110, ACCT 1120 AND ACCT 2020) for a more in depth study.  ACCT 1110 will count as the degree required accounting course.  ACCT 1120 and ACCT 2020 will count as degree electives.   (ACCT 1120 and ACCT 2020 can be taken in the same semester.)  This option is recommended for students earning the SLCC Business AS or AA Degree and then continuing to an accounting program at a transfer school.  All Utah 4-year colleges/universities accept this track.

CHOOSING ELECTIVES:
Elective selections should be based on the requirements of the intended transfer institution.  Contact any general academic advisor or School of Business academic advisors for more information.
Students may take additional transfer requirements beyond the AA/AS degrees at SLCC before transferring to Utah State University, Southern Utah University and Utah Valley University.
If a student is planning to transfer to the University of Utah to study Accounting, Finance or Operations Management, then student should take BUS 1100 as an elective course.   For all other transfer institutions, student should take ECON 2020 and BUS 2200 as elective courses.

CHOOSING GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES:
Recommended:  Choose Gen Ed electives with the following prefixes where available–BUS, MGT, MKTG, FIN, ACCT, ECON, CSIS.  Note, however, if you take a course for a Gen Ed elective, you may NOT count it also as a degree requirement/elective.

For Composition (EN):
ENGL 1010 and 2010

For Quantitative Literacy (QL):
MATH 1050 OR MATH 1090
Note that MATH 1050 is 4 credits and MATH 1090 is 3 credits.  Sample schedules are based on the student taking MATH 1050.

For Student Choice (IN or DEPTH):  Recommended
BUS 1010 (IN), BUS 2200 (IN), ECON 1010 (SS), ECON 1600 (SS), or FIN 1050 (ID).

For Distribution Areas:  Recommended
Interdisciplinary (ID)-NOTE:  BUS 1050 is also listed as an (ID) course for Gen Ed purposes.  However, it is a required course for the AS/AA degrees.  If a student wants to take BUS 1050 as their Gen Ed (ID) elective, the student must take an additional School of Business elective to achieve sufficient number of credit hours to complete the degree.
Social Science (SS)-if transferring to the University of Utah:  ECON 2020
Social Science (SS)-if transferring to Utah State University:  PSY 1010 or SOC 1010
