Program Description
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program in Geographic Information Systems and Drones is an interdisciplinary program of study that is aligned with the competencies outlined in the Department of Labor’s Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM). The program strongly emphasizes developing expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, global positioning systems (GPS), and geospatial programming.
Through its interdisciplinary approach and flexible curriculum, this degree empowers students to apply geospatial technology and relevant skill sets to their chosen fields of study, or as a standalone program of study. Given the increasing demand in governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and various industries for a workforce proficient in geospatial technology, this program is designed to leverage the spatial knowledge and technical skills acquired to enhance their respective fields of study or employment.
Along with GIS, the program specifically encompasses drones and the necessary software and hardware components for operation. By completing this degree, students are prepared to enter the rapidly expanding drone market and industry. The coursework mandated by the program equips students with the ability to manage and plan flight operations, process imagery data for analysis, and develop versatile skills applicable to various domains. These applications include but are not limited to geographic information systems, agriculture, natural and cultural resources management, emergency response, aerial videography, photography, and more.
