Program Description
The Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy will help students utilize critical thinking in the study of theory and techniques in a wide variety of clinical settings to evaluate, treat, and manage patients of all ages with respiratory illnesses and other cardiopulmonary disorders. Upon successful completion of the core program, the graduate will be eligible to take the National Board for Respiratory Care Entry-Level Respiratory Care Practitioner Examination to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist, and the Advanced Level Respiratory Care Practitioner Examination to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Career Opportunities
Respiratory therapists are clinicians with specialized training to work with people suffering from pulmonary diseases. They work in hospital settings, including emergency rooms, intensive care units, and other units. They work in out-patient settings and home health providing treatment for asthma and other respiratory conditions. Respiratory therapists work with all age groups through the lifespan. They are involved in treatment as well as patient education.

Transfer/Articulation Information
This AAS degree will prepare students to sit for professional boards. To transfer into a Bachelor’s program (Weber State University), a student must complete additional general education course requirements. For additional program information, see School of HS website or this program’s advisor.

Program Entry Requirements
Applicants will apply for admission to SLCC and declare their major as Pre-Health Sciences. Students will schedule an appointment to meet with the Respiratory Therapy Academic Advisor. Students must meet the following requirements:

Completion of specified program prerequisites courses with a grade of “C” or better.
Complete the School of Health Sciences’ online application
Have a GPA of 2.0 or above in all RESP prerequisite courses

Additional estimated cost of $4565 includes books, supplies, lab fees, board fees, and uniform.

Estimated Time to Completion
Once admitted into the program students are expected to take15 credits or more per semester (two academic years), based on full-time enrollment of 15 credits or more per semester; summers are not included. Additional time is required to complete prerequisites.

Respiratory Therapy AAS: Full-time

Advising Notes

Respiratory Therapy program accepts up to 25 students every Spring semester. Classes are taught during the evening typically from 5:00 pm-9:30 pm Monday-Friday. All prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the Fall semester in order to apply for the upcoming Fall semester. Once accepted and enrolled into the Respiratory Therapy program,students are required to maintain a grade of B- in all Respiratory Therapy course. If a student does not meet the minimum grade requirements, the student may retake the course one time. Failure to meet the minimum grade requirement in either didactic or clinical will require a repeat of both courses concurrently. If a student is dismissed from the program and wishes to return, they will need to reapply to the Respiratory Therapy program. Attendance is mandatory.
