Program Description: The Biomanufacturing AAS is a comprehensive program that can be completed in four semesters. In addition to the courses required for the Biomanufacturing Diploma, students will be required to master concepts and skills in advanced biomanufacturing-related topics. While some of these topics are required, others are subject to student choice, based on the emphasis of the Biomanufacturing AAS degree selected. This advanced training will expand on the core manufacturing and core science skills covered by the Biomanufacturing Diploma program and will ready the student for entryto mid- level positions in a biomanufacturing environment.

Currently, three emphases for the Biomanufacturing AAS are available:

  • Science & Technology
  • Manufacturing Technology
  • Lean Production & Six Sigma

The Science & Technology emphasis focuses on the current innovations driving biotechnology product research and development. This would be a good emphasis for students interested in the science and technology aspects of manufactured biotechnology products.

The Manufacturing Technology emphasis focuses on the manufacturing process. This would be a good emphasis for students interested in the mechanics and engineering aspects of biomanufacturing.

The Lean Production & Six Sigma emphasis focuses on the production philosophy that companies must adopt to minimize waste and product defects in order to maximize profit and customer satisfaction. This would be a good emphasis for students interested in the quality assurance and business management aspects of the biomanufacturing industry.

In addition to the General Education and major course requirements, the student will select the set of electives required for his/her chosen AAS emphasis.

Estimated Time to Completion: If student follow the suggested semester schedule, time to completion is two semesters.

  • The local biomanufacturing industry
  • The blend of sciences involved in biomanufacturing
  • Biomanufacturing careers

  • Basic biomanufacturing-related activities and specific processes
  • Quality management basics
  • Case studies of product failures

Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge in quality systems and regulations, which govern the biomanufacturing industry:

  • Evolution of quality systems
  • Evolution of federal regulations
  • Generic quality management structure
  • Quality system documents
  • How to perform inspections
  • How to qualify vendors
  • Audits
  • Non-conformance and corrective / preventative actions
  • System improvements

  • Students will demonstrate mastery of concepts and skills related to advanced biomanufacturing topics that are specific to their chosen biomanufacturing emphasis
1 - Substantive Knowledge

Students will demonstrate mastery of the following communication related skills, which are highly applicable to the biomanufacturing setting:

  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Effective documentation
  • Basic computer skills
  • Laboratory / workplace safety
2 - Communicate Effectively
Students will demonstrate proper data collection, handling, and analysis skills, particularly for quality assurance and control purposes as well as for troubleshooting and problem-solving 3 - Develop Quantitative Literacies

Students will demonstrate their ability to think critically for a variety of biomanufacturing-related functions:

  • Application of substantive knowledge
  • Quality assurance / quality control
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving of biomanufacturing processes and/or product issues
  • Facilitation of system improvements
4 - Think Critically
Students will demonstrate their ability to hold meaningful discussions about biomanufacturing concepts, skills, and related topics with those in the biomanufacturing field as well as those with limited or no knowledge. 5 - Civic Engagement and/or Working Professionally

Advising Notes:


Students successfully completing BMAN 1150  will receive a Certificate of Proficiency in Quality Systems and Regulations. This certificate recognizes their mastery of the concepts and skills in this critical and foundational core Biomanufacturing course. Certificates of Proficiency will be awarded for specific skill sets mastered, and can be utilized by employers to assess the skill level of an individual in both the hiring and promotional processes.
