Plan of Study 2016-2017

The following is a plan of requirements to complete this Associate of Arts degree in two years. Each student’s experience will vary slightly, as this plan does not include transfer work, Advanced Placement (AP), or other institutions’ concurrent enrollment credits. Math and English placement will be based on the student’s Accuplacer/ACT/SAT scores. If developmental courses are required, they should be taken in the student’s first semester.

NOTE: This plan assumes the student is prepared to take the courses listed. If prerequisites are required, additional semesters may be required to complete this degree.

• CHOOSING ACCOUNTING OPTION:

  • Accounting Option 1 is modeled after the University of Utah’s ACCT 2600 course.  Only the University of Utah accepts Option 1.
  • Accounting Option 2 coverage is accepted at all Utah 4-year colleges/universities. 
  • Students may also choose to take a three course accounting track (ACCT 1110, ACCT 1120 AND ACCT 2020) for a more in depth study.  ACCT 1110 will count as the degree required accounting course.  ACCT 1120 and ACCT 2020 will count as degree electives.   (ACCT 1120 and ACCT 2020 can be taken in the same semester.)  This option is recommended for students earning the SLCC Business AS or AA Degree and then continuing to an accounting program at a transfer school.  All Utah 4-year colleges/universities accept this track.

• CHOOSING ELECTIVES:

  • Elective selections should be based on the requirements of the intended transfer institution.  Contact any general academic advisor or School of Business academic advisors for more information.

  • Students may take additional transfer requirements beyond the AA/AS degrees at SLCC before transferring to Utah State University, Southern Utah University and Utah Valley University.

  • If a student is planning to transfer to the University of Utah to study Accounting, Finance or Operations Management, then student should take BUS 1100 as an elective course.   For all other transfer institutions, student should take ECON 2020 and BUS 2200 as elective courses. 

• CHOOSING GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES:
  Recommended:  Choose Gen Ed electives with the following prefixes where available–BUS, MGT, MKTG, FIN, ACCT, ECON, CSIS.  Note, however, if you take a course for a Gen Ed elective, you may NOT count it also as a degree requirement/elective.

• For Composition (EN):  Recommended

  • ENGL 1010  and ENGL 2010  

• For Quantitative Literacy (QL): Recommended

  • MATH 1050  or MATH 1090  

  • Note that MATH 1050 is 4 credits and MATH 1090 is 3 credits.  Sample schedules are based on the student taking MATH 1050. 

• For American Institutions (AI):  Recommended

  • ECON 1740 , HIST 1700 , or POLS 1100 .

• For Student Choice (IN or DEPTH):  Recommended

  • BUS 1010  (IN), BUS 2200  (IN), ECON 1010  (SS), ECON 1600  (SS), or FIN 1050  (ID).

• For Distribution Areas:  Recommended

  • Interdisciplinary (ID)-NOTE:  BUS 1050  is also listed as an (ID) course for Gen Ed purposes.  However, it is a required course for the AS/AA degrees.  If a student wants to take BUS 1050  as their Gen Ed (ID) elective, the student must take an additional School of Business elective to achieve sufficient number of credit hours to complete the degree.

  • Social Science (SS)-if transferring to the University of Utah:  ECON 2020  

  • Social Science (SS)-if transferring to Utah State University:  PSY 1010  or SOC 1010  

• For Language (LN):

  • For students without sufficient language proficiency, they must plan to take LANG 1010 before taking LANG 1020.  See language advisor.

  • Students who want to earn a BA degree after transfer from SLCC are advised to take a language that the chosen school offers as upper-division courses.  Not all colleges and universities offer all languages;  consult with the transfer school’s language department. 

• COMPUTER PROFICIENCY:

  • CSIS 2010  is a prerequisite for MGT 2040 .  If a student is not familiar with Excel, they should first take CSIS 1020  which is a recommended prerequisite for CSIS 2010 .
