2024-2025 SLCC General Catalog

Associate of Science (AS) / Associate of Arts (AA) Degree General Education Requirements

AS and AA degrees require a minimum of 34 credit of general education requirements as outlined below. The AA degree also requires successful completion of any language course at the 1020 level or higher as part of the 27 credits beyond general education (see Language (LN)  for more details). Students must complete a minimum of 61 credits, including the general education requirements, to graduate with an AS or AA degree. Unless specified by program, individual courses can meet multiple degree requirements. In this circumstance, extra courses are required to meet the total number of credits required to graduate.

Language courses at SLCC offer advantages to students planning to transfer. Completing the language sequence at the 2020 level will meet the B.A. language requirement at most four-year institutions in Utah and the U.S. Additionally, if you pursue a B.A., rather than a B.S., at the transfer institution, the languages courses taken at SLCC may reduce the number of courses you will need to complete your bachelor’s degree.  A grade of C or higher is encouraged as some colleges and universities may require it.

Note: Some academic programs may recommend different courses for the general education requirements than those listed below. General education recommendations are not requirements, but faculty have decided that such recommendations may aid the student in the future, especially when transferring. See academic programs listed alphabetically in the program descriptions section of this catalog.

Core Skills

Composition (EN) 2 courses

       and

Note Students must complete two English writing courses (6 credits) to satisfy the Composition (EN) Core Skills general education requirement. Most students will complete ENGL 1010  and then either ENGL 2010 , ENGL 2100  or HON 2211 . If a student has completed only ENGL 2010 , they may meet the Composition (EN) requirement by choosing a second writing class from one of the following: ENGL 1010 , ENGL 2100 , HON 2211 , or take the English CLEP exam (contact SLCC Testing Center).

Quantitative Literacy (QL) 1 course

Note MATH 1030 , a broad survey of mathematics topics, is required for all General Studies students.
